In a historic moment for basketball, South Sudan has unveiled its 12-man roster for the upcoming 2023 FIBA World Cup. Among the standout players is Chicago Bulls' Carlik Jones, who has made history by tying the legendary Toni Kukoc for two World Cup records.
Jones, a dynamic guard, has become the first player to represent both the United States and another nation at the FIBA World Cup. He previously played for the American team in the 2019 U19 World Cup.
Furthermore, Jones has tied Kukoc's record by being the only player to represent two different FIBA continents at the World Cup. Kukoc represented both Europe and North America throughout his illustrious career.
South Sudan's roster, led by two-time NBA All-Star and head coach Luol Deng, includes several other notable players. Nuni Omot, a rising star in the NBA G League, has also made his mark on the team.
The South Sudan Basketball Federation is filled with pride as they introduce this inaugural team. The Qualifiers for the World Cup ran from November 2021 to February 2023, with five African national teams earning a spot in the tournament.
South Sudan is making its global debut at the FIBA World Cup, marking an unchartered waters for the nation. The team is ranked 62nd in the FIBA World Rankings, making it the second lowest of the 32 teams in the tournament.
